Guam Chiropractor Treats Whiplash With Chiropractic Care

Cervical Acceleration-Deceleration (CAD) injury, more commonly referred to as whiplash, often happens as the direct result of a motor vehicle accident. Typically, the victim’s vehicle is struck from the rear, the side or the front causing the head to violently jerk forwards, backwards or sideways in a whipping motion. These high velocity forces on the neck can cause the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine and head to be stretched beyond their normal limits. Muscles can become stretched and torn, ligaments can sprain or even rupture. Vertebrae in the neck can become misaligned and the vertebral discs can herniate or bulge. Spinal nerves that exit between the vertebrae can become pinched and irritated. Cervical vertebrae can experience compression fractures and it is even possible for the spinal cord and brainstem to become tractioned or stretched.

Cervical whiplash can even happen when the vehicle sustains only minor damage. In fact, vehicles are designed to crush upon impact. This helps to absorb and dissipate energy, reducing injury to the vehicle’s occupants. When the vehicle does not crush, which is often the case in low-speed impacts, nearly all of the energy of impact is transferred to the vehicle’s driver and passengers.

Whiplash Symptoms

Many of the most common symptoms related to whiplash include:

  • Neck Pain and Stiffness
  • Dizziness, Nausea or Vomiting
  • Blurred Vision
  • Common Headache or Migraine
  • Ringing in the Ears (Tinnitus)
  • Pain in the Shoulders, Arms or Hands
  • Reduced Range of Motion
  • Swelling and Inflammation of the Soft Tissues
  • Muscle Pain, Muscle spasm and Muscle Fatigue

Many of these symptoms may be present immediately following a motor vehicle accident, or they may gradually appear over a number of weeks following the accident.

Why Choose Guam Chiropractic Care?

It’s important to note that a recent study in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery stated “…individuals involved in an auto accident are approximately seven times more likely to suffer neck degeneration within the first seven years following an accident…”  Dr. White’s goal at Advanced Chiropractic is to rehabilitate the injured joints, discs, musclces, ligament, tendons and nerves so that accident victim can return to optimal health and function thereby substantially reducing the chance of degeneration.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Specific chiropractic adjustments help to realign the spinal joints so that proper motion and function is restored.  This helps to alleviate tight and spasmed muscles that attach to the spinal vertebrae reducing muscle pain and fatigue.  Inflammation due to improper alignment of the joints is reduced as well.  Proper alignment of the vertebrae will also help to alleviate pressure on nerves that may be pinched or irritated causing pain and headaches.

Intersegmental Traction

Intersegmental traction is a therapy that provides passive motion to the joints.  The purpose of passive motion is to stretch and relax spasmed muscles and reintroduce motion back into inflamed and irritated joints.  This helps to alleviate pain and increase joint mobility and range of motion.  Intersegmental traction also helps to stretch and lengthen the spinal column reducing pressure on pinched and irritated nerves, as well increasing circulation and blood flow to intervertebral discs and surrounding tissues.

Therapeutic Massage

The joints of the spine are stabilized and held tightly together by the muscles of the body.  For this reason, problems of the muscles are almost always directly related to whiplash and other injuries associated with auto accidents.  Most commonly, muscles contract and spasm, which is a defensive mechanism of the body. This protective mechanism works limit motion and movement to injured areas of the body, specifically the joints and surrounding soft tissues.  Therapeutic massage works to relax tight muscles and targets problem areas where the muscles are injured and in spasm.
